    Backyard Glamping
If you haven't heard about this hopelessly millenial and Instagram-driven trend, are you actually living under a rock? If so, get out from under there and grab your gear- we're setting up a magical experience.

Oh, there's nothing quite like the great outdoors. Oh, but, *sigh*, the sweet creature comforts and plumbing of the indoors. This weekend, I wanted to harness the power of the extremists, the crunchies, the down n' dirty freeze-dried baked bean Clif Bar warriors. But, this weekend I also wanted to gather my best pals for a chill hang and have access to wifi, running water, and cold Chardonnay. Alas! I found the way. I like to think that I found Backyard Glamping, but I think it'd be fair to say that Backyard Glamping found me.  If you haven't heard about this hopelessly millenial and Instagram-driven trend, are you actually living under a rock? If so, get out from under there and grab your gear- we're setting up a magical experience.  I will share with you how I achieved a roughing-it simulation within four feet of my own home.     ...

    Norden

. This week, we're spreading some love to some of our favorite scents at Revival 119. Norden is a California based husband and wife duo who were inspired by their travels to capture an experience in a scent.  When taking a sniff of the Big Sur candle, it's not hard to get what they mean.  . Everything is designed and produced by them in California, they say on their website "We try to support local manufacturers and source the best products and materials we can find. Our stoneware containers are hand thrown in Encinitas, CA. Candles are poured in our studio using U.S.A. produced soy wax and a blend of essential oils and high quality fragrance oils." . Each candles ceramic may be used as a mug, planter, or vase after candle use (which takes a bit, the candles have an 80 hours burn time). They've recently launched incense in...

The Paloma is a refreshing and simple drink based out of Mexico and is quickly becoming one of my favorite summer cocktails.  A little sweet, a little sour and a little salty, the Paloma is a lot like a margarita but much easier to make.

. The Paloma is a refreshing and simple drink based out of Mexico and is quickly becoming one of my favorite summer cocktails.  A little sweet, a little sour and a little salty, the Paloma is a lot like a margarita but much easier to make.  Here is the recipe for my favorite version: . . 1 part Tequila--- I used Jose Cuervo because that's what we had but you could certainly use something a little smoother 3 parts Grapefruit Soda---I've found that both Squirt and grapefruit flavored Jarritos work well but Squirt might be a little less sweet and is therefore my preference 1 Lime---1/2 oz juice, wedges for garnish Salt for rim . Instructions: . Step 1:  Salt rim of glass Step 2:  Fill glass with ice then add lime juice and tequila Step 3:  Top the glass with grapefruit soda Step 4:  Stir and garnish with lime ...

Iowa City Pride is here again! This week we're coming out to support our LGBTQ brothers and sisters, because closets are for clothes. We got dolled up with local drag queen, Twila Belle who answered a few questions about drag culture.                                                How long have you been doing drag? And what got you into it? I have been doing drag for four years even though I said I would only do drag once! Joke's on me! Having done shows for the University of Iowa, I was drawn to the idea that I could play a character long term. I could make her my own and evolve her; thus, Twila was born. So, I decided to continue doing drag, with a  little push from my drag mom, and I...

  • Smudging : A Review and How To

    smudging

. Pretty much weekly, we get somebody in the store that picks up a bundle of palo santo or a sage smudge stick, twists it around in their hands, and eventually asks, “What is this?” A lot of people haven’t heard of it or are, frankly, just a little bit confused about the whole process. I sometimes find it hard to put into words, so I wanted to try out all of the “cleansing” options we have at Revival 119 to see what it’s all about.  Some Native American communities and other cultures (including Egyptian, Greek and Indian) are said to practice smudging, or the ritual act of purifying with the smoke of sacred herbs. Now, it’s become a popular personal ritual for clearing “bad energy” from spaces or people or whatever you wish. I have to admit, it’s really easy to hesitate under the circumstance of cultural appropriation. (See the links...
