I made this sticker in response to Iowa becoming the first state to explicitly remove gender identity from its civil rights protections. It’s a quiet but direct protest—an image that pushes back. In this reimagining of “American Gothic,” the man (the father) holds an LGBTQIA flag, the woman (the daughter) a trans flag. It’s meant to remind people: LGBTQIA folks have always been here.

The original “American Gothic” was painted by Grant Wood in 1930. He was born in Anamosa, lived and taught in Cedar Rapids, later led the New Deal Public Works of Art Project from Iowa City, and, toward the end of his life, was an Associate Professor of Fine Art at the University of Iowa. He helped found the Stone City Art Colony to support artists through the Depression.

He’s a cultural icon of the Midwest—but what most people don’t know is that he was also a closeted gay man. A colleague at the University of Iowa tried (and failed) to get him fired for it. Still, he made space for art and for others, even while hiding parts of himself.

This sticker is a small tribute to that full story—the part everyone knows and the parts that get left out.
