Refuge Studios Iowa City - "Iowan Subsistence" Giclée Print

Something I grew up hearing is the expression “Iowa feeds the world” later realizing this was a massive distortion of the truth; unless of course the world we’re feeding refers to cars. I’ve grown frustrated with this statement, often used in the context of justifying our bloated corn industry. How can we be feeding the world when 90% of our own food in Iowa is imported? How is it right that we have the best soil on the planet for agriculture and yet 1 in 9 Iowans are food insecure? How is it that less than 6% of food sold in Iowa is farmed locally? This piece is inspired by our incredible local farmers and organizations who are dedicated to bringing fresh local food to our most vulnerable communities.

The original piece is part of the larger body of work titled “Flyover State”, an exhibition on life and the perceptions of the Midwest.
